Claude and Gemini represent two different bets about what an AI assistant is for. Anthropic built a tool that thinks and writes carefully. Google built a layer over everything you already use. Both work; they suit different people.

Writing and long-document analysis
This is where Claude separates itself, and it is not a small margin. Claude’s prose reads like a person wrote it: varied sentence length, an argument that develops, no filler transitions. Gemini’s output is competent and noticeably more generic.
For editing, drafting anything with a voice, or working through a long document and reasoning about it, Claude is the better tool.
Breadth: Gemini does more things
Claude does not generate images or video. Gemini does both, with video available from the $4.99 AI Plus tier.
If you want one subscription that covers text, images and video, that is a real argument, and it is the single biggest functional gap between them.
Real-time information
Gemini wins on current information, and it should: it is Google’s. Search results are woven in natively rather than bolted on.
Claude has web search too, but if your work depends on what happened this morning, Gemini is the safer default.
Integration and ecosystem
Gemini is native in Gmail, Docs, Drive and Calendar. If your work already lives in Google, this decides the question by itself; nothing Anthropic offers competes on that axis.
Claude’s ecosystem play is different. It is Claude Code, which turns the subscription into a genuine development tool, and Projects for keeping context across long pieces of work. Narrower, deeper, aimed at people doing focused work rather than clearing an inbox.
Price
Gemini is cheaper at entry, $4.99 against Claude’s $17/mo yearly, and roughly level at the standard tier.
Claude’s higher tiers, Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200, exist for one reason: heavy Claude Code use. If you are not coding with it, ignore them.
Verdict
Choose Claude if you write for a living, work with long documents, or code. The writing quality gap is real and the Claude Code integration has no Gemini equivalent.
Choose Gemini if you live in Google Workspace, want image and video included, need current information, or want the cheapest paid tier.
A practical note: both free tiers are good. Use them for a fortnight on your actual work before paying either company. The differences show up quickly on real tasks and not at all on test questions.
