For years, “ChatGPT alternative” meant Claude or Gemini. Now there’s a fourth option with a different pitch: Mistral Vibe, the assistant from French company Mistral AI (it used to be called Le Chat; it was renamed on 28 May 2026). It doesn’t win on raw power, but it plays other cards: price, GDPR and data handled in Europe. Here’s how the three stack up.

Mistral Vibe: price and sovereignty
Pro costs $14.99 a month, less than the $20 of ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro, and includes more messages, extended reasoning and deep research reports. Work mode connects to Google Workspace, Outlook, SharePoint, Slack and GitHub, and there are remote coding agents powered by Mistral Medium 3.5. The catch: Mistral doesn’t publish concrete usage limits for any plan, and its performance trails the leaders on the toughest tests.
ChatGPT: the generalist
Still the most complete and most-used assistant, with the widest ecosystem. Its free plan offers unlimited text but now includes ads. If you want the most capability and tools, it’s the safe bet, though not the cheapest.
Claude: writing and document work
It stands out for natural writing and analysing long documents, and since 8 October 2026 it includes Docs, Slides and Design on every plan, including the free one. Its Max plans are expensive ($100 and $200) but include monthly API credits.
Which to pick
- Pick Mistral Vibe if GDPR and data in Europe matter to you, or you want a complete assistant for under $20 a month.
- Pick ChatGPT if you want the most polished generalist and the biggest ecosystem.
- Pick Claude if you write or analyse documents daily, or code with agents.
If you’re unsure, try all three on their free plans with your own tasks: personal taste usually weighs more than any table.
