For two years, Suno versus Udio was the hard call in AI music: one faster, the other with more control, and the answer came down to taste.
In 2026 it does not, and the reason has nothing to do with the music.
First, because it changes everything: Udio does not let you download
On 30 October 2025, Udio switched off downloads. This is not a bug or a free-plan limitation. It is the new business model.
It came out of the Universal Music Group settlement announced the day before, which ended their copyright infringement case. In exchange for licensing, Udio became a “walled garden”: you can generate music and listen to it inside the platform, but you cannot export it or publish it anywhere else.
There was a 48-hour rescue window, 3 to 5 November 2025, for existing users to retrieve what they had already made. It closed.
Udio and Universal have announced a jointly built, fully licensed platform for 2026, and downloads are expected to return with it. As of this comparison, it has not shipped.
What that means in practice
It depends entirely on what the song is for.
If the audio has to leave the platform - a YouTube video, a TikTok, a podcast, an ad, a game, a demo to send someone - Udio does not work for you today. It is not that it is worse. The file does not come out.
If you only want to create and listen, Udio is still an excellent generator, now with explicitly licensed music, which is a legal comfort Suno does not offer in quite the same way.
For most people arriving at the query “AI music generator”, the first situation is theirs. That is why this stopped being a close call.

The prices are near identical. The difference in value is the second-to-last row, not the first few.
One free-plan detail worth reading properly: Suno’s 50 daily credits do not roll over, you lose whatever you do not spend. But 50 a day is around 10 songs daily, far more room to experiment than Udio’s 100 a month.
Where Udio is still better
Reducing this to downloads alone would be unfair, because Udio was not the runner up by accident.
Fine control over structure. Udio has always given more room to shape a song in parts rather than accepting what comes out. If you like iterating on one section, that feel is still there.
An explicit legal position. After deals with Universal, Warner (November 2025), Merlin (January 2026) and Kobalt (April 2026), Udio runs on signed licences from much of the industry. Suno has been signing deals too, but Udio’s model is the more armoured of the two today.
Where Suno wins
You get the file. It is why almost everyone will pick it right now, and there is nothing more to argue.
The free plan is real. Ten songs a day is enough to decide whether the tool works for you, with no card involved.
Commercial rights from $10. Everything you generate on the free plan is personal use only; the moment the music goes into a monetised video, an ad or client work, you need Pro. At $10/mo that is cheap insurance.
Suno Studio on Premier. The $30 plan includes a full DAW, turning the tool from “generator” into “somewhere to produce”. Overkill for most people; for anyone actually releasing music, it is the reason to pay $30 instead of $10.

- You only want to create and listen: either, Udio if you value control
- You care about the licensing position: Udio
- You want to try without paying: Suno, its free plan is far more generous

Worth revisiting in a few months
Today’s picture is clear, but it is a snapshot. If Udio and Universal launch the licensed platform with downloads restored, this comparison reopens and will need redoing. When that happens, we will update this page.
