Character consistency: Vidu’s speciality
This is Vidu’s entire pitch and it delivers. Upload a reference image and the same face, hairstyle and clothing survive across generations.
We tested it directly and found the second reference photo barely matters: one image was enough to hold identity, with the second mainly helping clothing and full-body proportions.
For a recurring protagonist, a brand mascot or a real product that must look identical in every shot, this is the deciding feature and Runway does not match it.
Editing: Runway’s advantage
Runway is not only a generator. Background removal, inpainting, motion tracking and Runway Studio for post-production all live in the same place.
If your workflow ends with an edited piece rather than a raw clip, Runway saves you exporting to another tool entirely. If you only need clips, you are paying for capability you will not touch.
Price and credits
Vidu starts at $8/mo against Runway’s $15/mo, and the gap widens at the top: Vidu’s Ultimate is $79/mo yearly, Runway’s Max is $95/mo.
We measured Vidu’s credit costs in our own billing panel: a normal image-to-video generation costs 50 credits, Flash mode costs 10, and a full music video with One-Click MV costs 256. With 800 credits on the Standard plan that is roughly 20 normal generations, 80 in Flash, or three music videos.
One thing to know about both: subscription credits expire monthly on Vidu and do not roll over. Runway’s Max plan does allow one month of rollover.
The Runway change you need to know about
Runway retired its Unlimited plan on 1 September 2026. Monthly subscribers moved automatically to Max at the same $95/mo, with credits going from 2,250 to 9,500 but Explore mode disappearing - which was the only way to generate without a real cap.
If you were relying on unlimited relaxed-speed generation, that option no longer exists. Annual subscribers had a decision window during August, now closed: cancel with a refund for the remaining months, or take a credits bonus and move to Max.
Visual style: stylised versus photoreal
Vidu is consistently rated best in class for anime and 2D animation. Runway is stronger at photorealism and cinematic look.
That is worth taking seriously, because it is not a quality gap, it is a different target. Neither will beat the other on the wrong kind of project.
Which one to choose
Choose Vidu if you need the same character or product across many shots, you work in stylised or animated looks, or price matters. It is half the entry cost and better at the one thing it specialises in.
Choose Runway if you need photorealism, or you need generation and post-production in one place. The editing suite is genuinely unmatched and it is what the price buys.
A practical note: Vidu’s free plan lets you test character consistency properly, which is the whole reason to pick it. Runway’s 125 free credits run out after a handful of generations, so plan what you test.
