What changed: ChatGPT’s free plan now carries ads
“They all have a free plan” used to be a sentence without fine print. It is not quite that any more.
OpenAI began showing advertising inside ChatGPT in the US in February 2026, and on 24 August 2026 extended it to 31 European countries. It affects the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro and the business plans stay ad-free. The format is a single sponsored card below the answer, chosen from the context of the conversation you have open - not from your chat history or your saved memories, both of which are explicitly excluded.
Two details change how you should read the free plans:
- Turning off personalization does not remove the ads. It changes which ones you see, not whether you see them.
- There is an ad-free configuration of the free plan, but it costs you in functionality: fewer messages a day and, according to reports, no image generation and no deep research.
If you use a chatbot occasionally, a sponsored card is a minor toll. If you use one free every day, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity still carry no advertising, and that is a genuine argument in their favour that did not exist a month ago.
