Producing professional narration without hiring a voice actor is now routine. In 2026 the quality of these tools is close to indistinguishable from a real human voice, and the choice is less about realism than about how you plan to use it: one video, a thousand API calls, or your own cloned voice.

1. ElevenLabs - best overall quality

Not seriously challenged on realism. What separates ElevenLabs from cheaper options is not the sample, it is the long script: prosody and emphasis hold up over minutes of audio instead of flattening after the first paragraph.

With the new Eleven v4 model it clones a voice from just 10 seconds of audio (down from one minute), supports 90 languages (up from 32), and its automatic dubbing produces another language track while preserving the original speaker’s voice.

Free tier available, paid from $6/mo. Watch the credit system: it bills one credit per character, and a 2,000-word script is roughly 12,000 characters.

2. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech - best for integrations

Priced per use rather than per month, which makes it the sensible choice for applications rather than for making individual videos. Quality is good without being remarkable, and the reliability and scaling are what you are buying.

Pay as you go.

3. Amazon Polly - cheapest for developers

The budget option for anything already running on AWS. Voices are a step behind ElevenLabs, but at scale the cost difference is large enough that plenty of products accept the trade.

Pay as you go.

4. Murf AI - best for video and presentations

Built around a workflow rather than an API: you paste a script, pick a voice, sync it to slides or video, and export. If your output is a finished presentation rather than an audio file, that saves real assembly time.

From $29/mo.

⚠️ PlayHT has shut down

Until this update, this guide recommended PlayHT for real-time voice cloning. It no longer exists: Meta acquired the PlayHT team in July 2025 (an acqui-hire, not a product acquisition), the API went offline in late July 2025, and the platform fully sunset on 31 December 2025. Accounts, saved audio and cloned voices were deleted with no export option, and the play.ht domain no longer resolves.

For real-time voice cloning, the closest comparable option today is ElevenLabs, which also offers low-latency cloning alongside its overall quality.

Quick comparison

Tool Best for Entry price

Google Cloud TTS Enterprise integrations Pay per use
Amazon Polly Developers on AWS Pay per use
Murf AI Video and presentations $29/mo
PlayHT Shut down (Dec 2025) -

Which one should you pick?

For almost everyone: ElevenLabs. It is the best, the free tier is enough to judge it, and $6/mo is a low bar to clear.

If you are building an application: Google Cloud TTS or Amazon Polly. Per-use pricing scales in a way monthly subscriptions do not, and at volume the quality gap costs less than the price gap.

If you make presentation videos: Murf, because the workflow matters more than the last 5% of voice quality.

If it has to happen live: ElevenLabs (PlayHT shut down in December 2025).

And if you want music with vocals rather than narration, none of these is the answer - Suno generates a complete song from a single prompt.
