Firefly is Adobe’s generative AI, and its defining feature is not quality. It is where the training data came from.
Firefly is trained on licensed content, and Adobe backs the output with commercial indemnification. Every other major generator leaves you to decide how comfortable you are with that question; Adobe answers it contractually.

The credit system is the weakest part of the offer: four paid tiers with different allowances is more complexity than a single creator needs, and it is not obvious which tier fits until you have used it for a month.

Legal safety is the whole argument
This is worth being blunt about, because it is the only reason to choose Firefly over a better-looking generator.
If you produce images for a client, an employer or anything published under a brand, someone will eventually ask where the image came from. With Midjourney, the honest answer is complicated. With Firefly, the answer is short and Adobe stands behind it.
For agencies, in-house teams and regulated industries, that ends the discussion regardless of what the images look like.
Creative Cloud integration
Generative Fill inside Photoshop is where Firefly earns its place in a real workflow. Extending a background, removing an object, filling a crop - these are editing tasks, not generation tasks, and having them inside the tool a designer already uses is worth more than a standalone generator that produces prettier images elsewhere.
Judged purely as a standalone generator, Firefly is unremarkable. Judged as a Photoshop feature, it is very good.

Businesses and agencies: copyright indemnification lowers legal risk on large-scale commercial campaigns.
Creative Cloud users: anyone already paying for Photoshop or Illustrator gets AI generation without leaving their usual workflow.
Beginners: the simple, fully-featured interface makes it an easy entry point into generative AI with no steep learning curve.
Not recommended if: you want maximum photorealism or artistic quality, or you’d be frustrated by a credit system that deducts even on failed generations.

Firefly is a specialist product and the specialism is legal, not visual.
Choose it if your output goes to clients or an employer, or if you already live in Photoshop and want generative editing where you work.
Do not choose it if you want the best-looking images and nobody is asking about rights. Midjourney is better at that for the same money, and Leonardo is better if you need a consistent house style.
