What Leonardo AI is
Leonardo AI is an image generator aimed at people who want to direct the result rather than describe it and accept what arrives. It grew out of game asset production, and that origin shows in everything it does well.
Its flagship model is Phoenix, but the model is not really the story here. The story is the tooling around it.
Plans and pricing
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly (per month) | Tokens/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | - | 150 tokens/day |
| Apprentice | $12/mo | $10/mo | 8,500 |
| Artisan | $30/mo | $24/mo | 25,000 |
| Maestro | $60/mo | $48/mo | 60,000 |
The free plan is a genuine trial: 150 tokens a day, no card, and it renews daily rather than running out permanently.
Be aware that tokens do not map cleanly to images. Different features cost different amounts, and the more powerful tools burn through an Apprentice allowance faster than the number suggests.
What makes it different
Custom model training. You can train Leonardo on your own images and generate in that style consistently afterwards. For a studio with an established look, or an illustrator protecting a recognisable style, this is the feature that no mainstream competitor matches.
Real-time Canvas. You sketch, and the image builds as you draw. It converts image generation from a slot machine into something closer to drawing, which is exactly what people who can already draw have been asking for.
Elements. Style modifiers you can dial up or down by weight, instead of rewriting a prompt and hoping the change lands.
Where it loses to Midjourney
Straight out of the box, a Midjourney image usually looks better than a Leonardo image. Midjourney has an opinion about beauty baked in; Leonardo waits for you to supply one.
That is the whole trade. If you want a great image with minimal effort, Midjourney. If you want this specific image, and you are willing to work for it, Leonardo.
Leonardo vs Midjourney vs DALL-E

Verdict
Leonardo is the best choice for creative professionals producing a body of work rather than individual images: concept artists, game studios, anyone who needs fifty assets that look like they belong together.
For a one-off illustration, it is more tool than you need and Midjourney will get you there faster and prettier.
Use the free plan properly before paying. 150 tokens a day is enough to find out whether Canvas and custom models fit how you work, and those two features are the entire reason to choose Leonardo over anything else.
