What Midjourney is
Midjourney is the most widely used AI image generator in the world. In 2026 its output is close to indistinguishable from real photography, and character consistency lets you hold the same face and style across generations.
Unlike its competitors, Midjourney does not try to be the easiest or the cheapest. It tries to be the best at artistic quality, and that title is still hard to dispute.
Which version you are actually using
This is the biggest source of confusion, because half the internet is still writing V7 guides.
Midjourney has moved its default model twice in a few months:

So if you opened Midjourney today and changed nothing, you are generating with V8.2, not V7. You can confirm it in Midjourney’s official version documentation, which is the only source that stays current.
What V8.1 brought. This is the big jump of the two. Much faster generation, better prompt reading, stronger retention of small details and, above all, native 2K HD: images at 2K directly, with no separate upscale step. Midjourney made HD mode cheap enough that it became the default.
Worth correcting a figure that circulates widely: Midjourney does not produce native 4K. What V8.1 onward gives you is 2K in HD without an upscale, which is not the same thing.
What V8.2 brought. More a change of taste than of engine: it aims for bolder, more creative images, cuts down mediocre results, and noticeably improves Personalization, which now reads your aesthetic preferences better the more you have used it.

Stealth mode - which keeps your generations out of Midjourney’s public gallery - exists only on Pro and Mega. If your work is under NDA, that is the line where the price is set for you rather than by you.
What Midjourney does best
Artistic quality. No other model matches its visual aesthetic. It has an eye for composition, lighting and colour that the others do not reach.
Speed. V8.1 is the fastest model they have shipped, with standard jobs rendering several times faster than earlier versions.
Character Reference. The --cref parameter lets you use a reference image to
hold the same character across generations. Genuinely useful for illustrators and
content creators.
The honest problems
Service reputation. The contrast between output and customer service is stark. On Trustpilot Midjourney sits at 1.5/5, the lowest score of any tool we cover. The recurring complaints: a rigid refund policy, images deleted without warning, and support that answers only a fraction of negative reviews, sometimes after two weeks.
If you depend on the platform for professional work, keep local copies of everything you generate.
Prompts do not carry across versions. Every model jump changes how prompts land. A library tuned on V7 will need reworking on V8.2. It is the price of the model improving quickly.
Hands, still. They remain the visible weak point.
Text in images. Clearly improved with V8.1, but not a reason to choose Midjourney. If your work is posters, logos or anything where typography has to come out correct, Ideogram is more reliable.
Who it is for
A good fit for: digital artists and graphic designers, social content creators, advertising and marketing agencies, authors needing illustrations, and game developers doing concept art.
Not for you if: you want a free tool, you need to edit photos of real people, or you want a visual interface with no parameter syntax to learn.
Verdict
Midjourney is still the best image generator available in 2026, now on V8.2 by default. At $10/mo the entry price is reasonable for the quality, and the native 2K HD of the V8 family removes a step that used to cost time and credits.
The two real drawbacks have not changed: there is no free plan, and the customer service record is poor. Buy it for the output, not for the relationship.
