The child safety controversy

In 2024, a lawsuit filed in the United States alleged that the app contributed to the serious deterioration of the mental health of a 14-year-old who had developed a severe dependency on one of its characters. Researchers at Common Sense Media separately found that age verification was not effective, allowing access to children under 13.
The company went further than time limits: since 24 November 2025, Character.AI bans users under 18 from open-ended chats with its AI characters. Verification runs through a selfie-based facial scan, an in-house behavioural analysis tool and third-party tools like Persona; if those fail, the company falls back on facial recognition and ID checks. Minors keep access to other parts of the app, such as video creation, but not to free-form character conversation. The company still faces several child-safety lawsuits, including one from the mother of a teenager who says the platform’s chatbots pushed her son toward suicide.
