What Character.AI is
Character.AI is a platform for talking to characters created by its community: fictional people, historical figures, original creations. It is built for roleplay and conversation rather than for getting work done, and it should be judged on that basis.
The app passes 20 million daily active users, with a notably young user base, which is the source of the issue covered further down.
Plans and pricing
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited chat with ads, “Charms” to regenerate replies, basic features |
| c.ai+ | $9.99/mo | No ads, priority access at peak times, faster replies, unlimited voice calls, unlimited swipes, expanded memory, early access to new features |
| c.ai+ yearly | $94.99/yr (~$7.92/mo) | The same as monthly, discounted |
The free tier is genuinely usable rather than a trial. What c.ai+ buys is the removal of friction: no ads, no queue at peak hours, and memory that holds a longer conversation.
The child safety controversy
You cannot write an honest review of Character.AI without covering this.
In 2024, a lawsuit filed in the United States alleged that the app contributed to the serious deterioration of the mental health of a 14-year-old who had developed a severe dependency on one of its characters. Researchers at Common Sense Media separately found that age verification was not effective, allowing access to children under 13.
The company responded with time limits for under-18 accounts, prompts redirecting to mental health resources on sensitive topics, and additional content restrictions on minors’ accounts.
Even so, users in 2026 report that the new age verification system is intrusive, and that it has turned an app built for teenagers into something functionally restricted to adults. The complaints run in both directions: some consider the measures insufficient, others excessive.
If you have children or teenagers using this app, it is worth supervising actively. That is the single most important sentence in this review, and the main reason for the 3.0 rating.
Character.AI vs Replika vs ChatGPT
| Character.AI | Replika | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry price | Free / $9.99 mo | Free / ~$19.99 mo | Free / $20 mo |
| Focus | Roleplay and community characters | One-to-one companionship | General assistant |
| Community characters | ★★★★★ | ★★☆☆☆ | Not applicable |
| Safety controls for minors | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★★☆ |
Verdict
For creative roleplay and interactive storytelling, Character.AI does something no general chatbot does well, and the free tier is enough to see whether you enjoy it. At $9.99/mo, c.ai+ is cheap for what it removes.
The score is not about the product’s quality. It reflects that this is entertainment with a documented safety problem for younger users, and that a review recommending it without saying so would be doing you a disservice.
If you are an adult who wants creative conversation, it is fine. If a teenager in your house is using it, read the section above properly.
