What is Claude?
Claude is the artificial intelligence assistant developed by Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI employees. Since its launch, Claude has earned a reputation as the smartest and most honest AI chatbot on the market.
In 2026, Claude’s latest models are among the most advanced available, competing directly with OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 family.
New: Claude Opus 5
On 24 July 2026, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5, now the default model on the Max plan and the most capable option available on Pro. It matches Fable 5 (the flagship model) on intelligence roughly at half the price ($5 per million input tokens / $25 output, versus Fable 5’s $10/$50). It ships with a 1-million-token context window - well above the previous 200,000 - and an effort selector (low/medium/high) that lets you trade cost for task complexity. Its knowledge cutoff (May 2026) is also the most recent across the whole Claude lineup.
To gauge its reasoning level: Opus 5 solved all six problems of the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad, with a perfect 42/42 score, without external tools or agent assistance - above the gold-medal threshold. Worth noting it wasn’t the only model to do so: Claude Fable 5, GPT-5.6 Sol and Kimi K3 also hit the maximum, so it’s a milestone for this generation of models overall rather than an Anthropic exclusive.
New: Claude Opus 5.5
On 22 September 2026, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5, the successor to Opus 5 and, per Anthropic itself, the most capable model it has shipped so far. Pricing drops 20% from Opus 5: $4 per million input tokens / $20 output (down from $5/$25). Sources disagree on whether it matches Claude Fable 5.1’s level or surpasses it - best not to treat that as settled until Anthropic confirms it on its own site. It keeps the 1-million-token context window, and unlike Fable, it doesn’t retain user data for 30 days.
New: Claude Sonnet 5.5
On 28 September 2026, Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, the everyday mid-tier model: it runs over 30% faster and costs up to 30% less per task, at the same per-token price as Sonnet 5 ($2/million input, $10/million output). The biggest jump is in agentic coding: from 10.3% to 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0. It also adds invisible text watermarking (built to comply with regulations like the EU AI Act) and is the first Sonnet to ship with the cyber safeguards previously reserved for Opus. Available on claude.ai, the API, and platforms like AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.
Plans and pricing
New on October 8, 2026: Claude Docs, Slides and Design left beta and are available on every plan, including Free. You can edit a document, deck or design together with Claude, though the free plan has the lowest usage limits and everything counts toward the plan’s limits. On Enterprise they turn on by default from October 15 (except HIPAA organizations). The standalone claude.ai/design site stays open until December 14, 2026.
| Plan | Price | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/mo | Claude with daily limits; Docs, Slides and Design included (since October 8) |
| Pro | $17/mo yearly, $20/mo monthly | Claude Code, Cowork, higher limits (Docs, Slides and Design are no longer paid-only) |
| Max 5x | $100/mo | 5x more usage than Pro, recommended for Claude Code |
| Max 20x | from $200/mo | 20x more usage than Pro, priority access to new features |
| Team standard | $20/seat/mo yearly, $25 monthly | Everything in Pro plus collaboration, SSO, admin |
| Team premium | $100/seat/mo yearly, $125 monthly | 5x more usage per seat |
| Enterprise | Custom, from $20/seat + API | No limits, SCIM, HIPAA, advanced security |
Monthly API credits: the Max and Team plans include API credits each month: $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x; on Team they are pooled and capped at $500. Enterprise is not eligible. Teams need at least two members and support up to 150 seats.
You can also gift Claude with 1, 3, 6-month or 1-year gift cards, available at claude.ai/gift.
What it does better than any other chatbot
High-quality writing
If you write content, emails or reports, Claude is your best ally. Its text sounds natural and human - something many chatbots fail to achieve. You won’t find that robotic tone so typical of AI.
Analyzing very long documents
With Opus 5.5, Claude can process up to 1 million tokens in a single conversation - up from 200,000 before. In practical terms, that means you can upload an entire book, a 100-page contract or a full codebase and Claude analyzes it without losing the thread.
Honesty above all
One of the most surprising things about Claude is that it admits when it doesn’t know something. It doesn’t invent answers or hallucinate data like other chatbots. If it doesn’t have reliable information, it tells you clearly.
Claude vs ChatGPT: which to choose?
| Criterion | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Writing quality | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Max context | 1M tokens (Opus 5.5) | 128K tokens |
| Image generation | ❌ | ✅ (GPT Image) |
| Plugins and tools | Limited | Many |
| Honesty | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| Price | Same | Same |
Conclusion: For writing and analysis, Claude wins. For code and visual tools, ChatGPT has the edge.
Who is Claude ideal for?
- Writers and content creators who need high-quality text
- Lawyers and consultants who analyze extensive documents
- Students who need clear, honest explanations
- Companies looking for a reliable assistant for daily tasks
What users say
The 2026 Reddit consensus is clear: “if you need to get hard work done right, use Claude.” In coding it wins with 78% community preference, and for writing users highlight that it “feels like talking to a person,” follows instructions precisely, and hallucinates less than ChatGPT or Gemini. Verified reviews average 4.1/5.
The real complaints: Pro plan limits - heavy users report hitting the cap after just a few hours of intensive use, with little transparency about when the limit kicks in. And the most repeated complaint of all: Claude doesn’t generate images.
Final verdict
Claude is, in many ways, the most capable AI chatbot available in 2026. If your priority is text quality and honesty, Claude is your best option. The free plan is more than enough to get started.
Score: 4.5/5 - Almost perfect, it just lacks image generation and more integrations.
