The pricing model is one credit per character, and this is where people get caught out. A 2,000-word script is roughly 12,000 characters, so the free plan covers less than one long video. Read those minute estimates as generation, not as iteration: every re-render of the same script costs again.
Voice quality
What separates ElevenLabs from cheaper alternatives is not the sample, it is the long script. Prosody, pacing and emphasis stay consistent across minutes of audio instead of drifting into a flat read after the first paragraph.
It supported 32 languages until the Eleven v4 release; support now extends to 90 languages. English, Spanish, French and German are the strongest; quality drops in less widely spoken languages, so test before committing to a project.
Voice cloning
September 2026 update: ElevenLabs released Eleven v4 and Eleven v4 Turbo on 28 September, already live in ElevenAgents, ElevenCreative and the API. The headline change: voice cloning now needs just 10 seconds of audio instead of one minute, language support jumped from 70 to 90, and the expression tags introduced in v3 expand and can now be stacked together. Latency also dropped, aimed at voice agents that need to sound fluid in real-time conversation.
Before v4, you needed one minute of clean audio to clone a voice, which was already far less than most competitors ask for. The result is convincing enough to narrate an entire video in your own voice without recording it.
The obvious caution: clone only voices you have the right to use.
Automatic dubbing
Dubbing takes an existing video and produces another language track while preserving the original speaker’s voice. For creators with an audience in more than one language, this is the feature that pays the subscription: you record once and publish in several markets.
What users complain about
Across G2, Capterra and Product Hunt the praise is consistent: voice naturalness, cloning quality, and an API developers get running in minutes.
The real complaints are worth knowing. The credit system runs down faster than expected, consistency is irregular on long projects where numbers, abbreviations and accents sometimes come out wrong, and support is slow.
Beyond voice: music and an MCP server
ElevenLabs is no longer just text-to-speech. Two additions this autumn:
- AI music (ElevenMusic): on 11 September 2026 it launched Music v2.5, which became the default model in ElevenMusic. According to the company, the gains show most in vocal-led and acoustic-heavy genres (R&B, soul, hip hop, rock, metal, orchestral and cinematic music), and it is built for commercial use. It’s also available in ElevenCreative and through the API.
- Hosted MCP server: since 22 August 2026 the local MCP server is deprecated; the hosted server (api.elevenlabs.io/v1/mcp) signs in with your ElevenLabs account through OAuth, with nothing to install and no API key. It lets you use the voice tools from assistants such as Claude or Cursor.
All products (voice, sound effects, video) share the same monthly credit pool, so more features don’t mean a separate bill, but your credits do go faster if you use several at once.
Verdict
ElevenLabs is the best AI voice tool available in 2026 and nothing else is particularly close on naturalness.
Use the free plan to judge the quality, then go straight to Creator at $22/mo if you publish regularly. Starter at $6 sounds attractive but 30 minutes of audio disappears quickly once you start re-recording takes.
