What Notion AI is
Notion AI is not a chatbot bolted onto a notes app. It is a set of features that work on your own workspace: it searches across everything your team has written, answers questions from it, takes meeting notes, and runs multi-step tasks across pages.
That framing matters, because it decides whether the product is valuable to you. Notion AI is only as good as what is already in your Notion.

There is no separate AI add-on any more: the old $10/month add-on was retired in May 2025 (anyone who had it keeps it). To get the real features you move to Business, which for a team of five is $1,200 a year.
One cost the pricing page does not lead with: autonomous Custom Agents are billed on top, at $10 per 1,000 monthly credits. A couple of simple always-on automations can add real money to a $20/user bill, so price that in before you build your workflow around them.
New in October 2026: rebuilt agents and a new credit system
On 19 October 2026 Notion launched the sixth generation of its agents:
- Tasks of up to 24 hours: an agent can now work on a single task for more than 24 hours (previously five minutes), and it has its own computer and browser, with a “Review for me” mode that adds safety checks.
- A cheaper Auto: the “Auto” model router delivers, according to Notion’s own internal tests (not independently verified), results comparable to Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra at about 90% lower average cost.
- New credit system: each member of a Business or Enterprise plan gets 1,500 Standard credits a month (when Notion picks the model) and 500 Select credits (when you pick the model or run Custom Agents); neither pool rolls over. Extra credits cost $10 per 1,000 on monthly billing. Existing workspaces move to the new system on 2 November 2026.
- Other changes: you can connect a ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro or Go) to a personal agent, and “bring your own AI” (BYOK) is in private alpha for Enterprise.
For anyone already paying for Business, the thing to watch is credits: the AI is still included, but heavy use of agents and hand-picked models draws down Select credits.
The three features that matter
AI search is the strongest of them. It reads the content of your workspace rather than matching titles, and it cites the pages an answer came from. For a team with two years of accumulated documents, this alone can justify the tier.
AI Meeting Notes transcribes and summarises meetings inside Notion, removing a separate subscription for most teams.
Notion Agent takes a multi-step instruction and works across pages to carry it out. It is the newest and least predictable of the three, but it is where Notion is clearly heading.
The honest limitation
If your team’s knowledge lives in Google Docs, Slack threads and people’s heads, Notion AI has nothing to search. The product assumes you already committed to Notion as your source of truth.
And for general questions unrelated to your workspace, it is slower and weaker than just opening ChatGPT or Claude. It is not trying to compete there, but people buy it expecting that and are disappointed.
What users say
Opinion is split: Notion holds a 4.6/5 on G2 with over 10,000 reviews, but sentiment on Reddit in 2026 runs more critical, especially on pricing. Highly upvoted threads in r/Notion call the AI “not worth it” since the plan change: an individual user used to pay $22/mo total (Plus + add-on), now full AI requires the Business plan. The custom agents and their credit system also draw criticism - simple automations can cost an extra $30/mo.
The most repeated underlying complaint: Notion AI is a “wrapper” around GPT and Claude that only sees inside your workspace. Power users who get real value from it (meeting summaries, searching documentation) do report saving hours a week.
Who it’s for
Notion AI is a must if your team or business already has documentation, projects or knowledge bases in Notion. The Business plan at $20/user/mo pays for itself easily if you use it to summarize meetings or answer questions about internal documentation.
Verdict
Notion AI is worth it for teams that already run on Notion and have enough written material for search to have something to find. In that situation, AI search plus meeting notes replaces two or three separate tools and the $20/user is defensible.
For individuals, and for teams whose documents live elsewhere, it is not. Use the trial on Free or Plus to see whether AI search finds anything useful in your workspace - that single test answers the whole question.
