How we did this review: it is based on Replit’s official documentation (pricing, plans and the 2026 changelog) and independent coverage. It is not an extended hands-on test of our own, and we flag where sources disagree.
What is Replit?
Replit is a browser-based development environment that, through Replit Agent, lets you create applications by describing them in plain language. Unlike tools that only generate code, Replit includes the environment where it runs and is published: editor, database, authentication, domains, secrets and deployment. It’s the most direct alternative to Lovable, with more track record as a platform for coding.
What changed in 2026
- Agent 4 (March): added Plan mode (the agent maps out the build before writing code), a Design Canvas for exploring mockups, and parallel task handling.
- Mobile (April and July): the preview can show an iOS simulator or an Android emulator inside the workspace, with no Xcode or physical device, and projects created before Agent 4 can be extended with a mobile app. In July, Replit’s mobile app added voice prompting.
- Publishing: private publishing, once limited to Pro and Enterprise, has been open to Core and Starter since May. The agent can also read production deployment logs to debug real errors. The Stripe integration became an app install from the Stripe Marketplace, with no copying of API keys.
- Free Mode (August): lets you use the agent without spending Power or Max Mode credits.
- Other additions: Routines to schedule recurring agent work, the ability to steer the agent while it works, and a Security Agent that audits entire projects. The agent’s modes are now Free, Power and Max: Economy was retired, the old Power was renamed Max, and the new Power is the cost-focused default. Free Mode doesn’t spend credits (it picks the model automatically); Power and Max do. The Pro plan also introduced a Turbo Mode that’s 2.5 times faster.
- Models (October): at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 16, CEO Amjad Masad said Replit has stopped working with Anthropic over cost, partnership and performance, and that ChatGPT is now the default model. He later clarified that Anthropic models remain available on the platform, and a source cited by TechCrunch says the deal is still in place, so the split is disputed.
Plans and pricing in 2026
According to Replit’s documentation and pricing page:
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free | Daily agent allowance, limited monthly cloud credits, one published app |
| Core | from $20/mo | $20 in monthly credits, full Agent with Plan and Build, 1 parallel agent task, up to 5 collaborators, unlimited published apps, 7-day database restore |
| Pro | $100/mo | More Free Mode usage, up to 10 parallel agent tasks, up to 15 builders, 28-day restore, credits in tiers from $100 to $4,000 a month |
Core credits don’t roll over and reset each cycle; Pro lets unused credits carry over (sources disagree between one and two months). The Teams plan was discontinued and its users moved to Pro automatically at no extra cost for the rest of their term. Figures vary by page: several independent guides give Core’s $20 as the annual-billing price and put monthly billing at around $25, and Pro drops to $90-95 billed annually. Replit versus Lovable and Cursor
- Versus Lovable: both create apps from a description. Replit is a broader platform (languages, mobile apps, its own runtime); Lovable is tighter around the React plus Supabase flow. If you mainly want quick web prototypes, Lovable is simpler; if you want a full environment with mobile and built-in publishing, Replit goes further. See the Lovable vs Cursor comparison for the other extreme.
- Versus Cursor: Cursor is a local editor for people who already code; Replit runs entirely in the browser and needs nothing installed.
Who it’s for
- Founders and learners who want to go from idea to a published app without setting up servers.
- Small teams prototyping, with the agent working in parallel.
- Anyone who wants to try a mobile app without setting up Xcode or a local emulator.
Verdict
Replit is one of the most complete environments for building apps with an AI agent: it brings together in the browser what other tools make you assemble by hand, and 2026 gave it Plan mode, mobile and better publishing. The weak spot is agent cost, which depends on hard-to-predict credits, and a notable price jump between Core and Pro. For prototyping and launching it deserves a free trial; for a serious long-term project, weigh an AI editor like Cursor.
