Runway is the most complete AI video generation and editing platform on the market for professional creators. In 2026 its Gen-4 model is a real step up: better visual coherence, characters that hold their appearance between frames, and overall quality approaching low-budget cinema.
The difference from most competitors is that Runway is not only a generator. It is a full post-production suite, and that is what justifies its price.

The Unlimited plan: Max already replaces it, and the final cutoff is 30 November
Correction (20 October 2026): we had published that Unlimited was being retired on 1 September. Runway updated the schedule on 27 August: eligible legacy Unlimited plans stay unchanged through 30 November 2026, after which monthly subscribers will move automatically to Max at the same $95/mo. New customers can no longer buy Unlimited: Max replaced it for new sign-ups (one source puts that on 1 June).

The price does not go up and the credit allowance more than quadruples. What disappears is Explore mode, which was the only way to generate without a real cap. If you were leaving Runway working in the background for hours, that option is going away; in exchange you get a high but finite number of credits and no queue.
If you’re on the annual plan, per the coverage the choice is between cancelling with a refund for the remaining months or accepting a credits bonus and migrating to Max; check the exact terms in your account. If you’re on Unlimited, make the most of it until 30 November.
Gen-4: what improved
The gains in 2026 are in coherence rather than raw resolution: characters drift less between frames, lighting stays stable, and motion reads as physical rather than morphing. Ten seconds is the practical ceiling per generation.
Where it still struggles is long-scene consistency. Chain several generations together and the differences show.
Runway against the competition
AI video competition is intense in 2026, and one name has dropped out:
- Kling (Kuaishou): Excellent quality at a lower price, especially for videos with people.
- Vidu: The best at keeping the same character consistent across clips.
- PixVerse: The fastest and cheapest to get started.
- Runway Gen-4: The most complete on editing tools and the most integrated into professional workflows.
- Sora (OpenAI): No longer competes. It shut down as a consumer product in April 2026, and its API switched off on 24 September.
If you only need to generate clips, Kling may be cheaper. If you need a full workflow (generate + edit + export), Runway is the option.
The editing tools are the real argument
This is what nobody else in the category matches. Background removal, inpainting to erase or replace elements, motion tracking, and Runway Studio for post-production, all in the same place as the generator.
If your workflow ends with an edited piece rather than a raw clip, Runway saves you a round trip to another tool. If you only need clips, you are paying for capability you will not use.
What users say
Time for honesty here: user reviews on Trustpilot are tough on Runway. The most repeated complaints: credits run out extremely fast (users report burning through a Pro plan’s credits after just a couple of 30-second videos), the now-retired “Unlimited” plan ran at a heavily throttled speed (up to 20 minutes for a 10-second video, with no generation queue), and value for money feels poor when generations fail and still consume credits.
Professionals who budget for it value the integrated editing tools, which remain the best in the category. But if your budget is tight, work out exactly how many generations you need before paying.
Verdict
Runway is the professional option, and priced like it. Gen-4 quality is at the top of the market and the editing suite is genuinely unmatched.
For most creators, though, the value is hard to defend: Kling delivers more photorealism per dollar, and PixVerse delivers far more speed. Runway earns its price when you need generation and post-production in one place.
If you are moving from Unlimited, the thing to watch is whether 9,500 credits actually cover your usage. At roughly 25-50 credits a generation that is a lot of clips, but it is a ceiling where before there was none.
