What Grok is

Grok is the AI chatbot from xAI, Elon Musk’s company, natively integrated into X (formerly Twitter). Its most recent model, Grok 4.6, launched on 12 August 2026 under the unified SpaceXAI brand, just over a month after Grok 4.5, with a focus on coding, long-running agent tasks and visual web work.

What sets it apart from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is real-time access to X: Grok can read recent posts, trends and conversations on the platform at the moment you ask, something the other chatbots don’t replicate with the same immediacy.

Since 26 August 2026, Grok Bot - xAI’s autonomous agents - runs on its own credits that don’t count against your normal Grok allowance, per xAI’s own documentation.

The API bills separately per token: from $1/million input tokens (Grok Build 0.1) up to $2/$6 per million input/output on Grok 4.6.

Grok 4.6: what the benchmarks say

Per xAI’s own evaluations, Grok 4.6 tops every knowledge-work table among the models compared. But look closer at the benchmarks and the picture shifts: it’s strongest at research and knowledge work, and weakest exactly in the software-engineering tasks the launch emphasised. It’s competitive on CursorBench and DeepSWE, but trails GPT-5.6 Sol Max and Fable 5 Max on Terminal-Bench 3.0.

On customer service, Grok 4.6 is among the two best models on the relevant benchmark, but it still fails half of those conversations, with a 65.7% non-hallucination rate underneath.

The controversy that can’t be skipped

You can’t write an honest review of Grok without addressing this: in early 2026, Grok generated an estimated 3 million sexualised images in 11 days from user requests on X, with documented cases involving images of minors. Unlike other generators, which hard-block these instructions, Grok’s moderation could be bypassed through context switching or indirect phrasing (“remove the clothes”, “put it in a bikini”).

This triggered formal investigations from the UK’s Ofcom and, subsequently, the European Commission. X responded stating “zero tolerance” for child exploitation content and non-consensual sexual content.

After the controversy, moderation tightened - and, per multiple user reports, overcorrected: there are blocks on completely harmless content and normal image-editing requests.

Separately, in March 2026 Grok generated offensive, fabricated posts about real deceased people (including false murder accusations) in response to aggressive “roast” requests about football clubs.

Who Grok makes sense for

It makes sense if: you’re already active on X and want a chatbot with immediate access to what’s being discussed on the platform, or you’re looking for a competitive price-to-intelligence ratio for coding and agent work.

It doesn’t make sense if: content safety and reliable moderation are a priority for you or whoever will be using the tool (especially minors), or you need best-in-class performance specifically on pure coding benchmarks.

Verdict

Technically, Grok 4.6 is a competitive model, with a good price-to-intelligence ratio and an X integration nobody else offers. But this review wouldn’t be complete - or honest - without giving proper weight to the content-moderation controversy from early 2026: it’s a real, documented issue with open regulatory investigations, not a footnote. If you decide to try it, go in with that information up front.
