What is Gemini?
Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, built natively into Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar, Android and Google Search itself. In 2026, with the Gemini 3 model family, it has become the obvious choice for anyone who already lives inside the Google ecosystem.
Its real differentiator isn’t raw model quality - it’s contextual access to your own email, documents and calendar, something ChatGPT and Claude can’t match without third-party integrations.
In August 2026 Gemini crossed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the most-used AI assistant in the world by that measure.
Plans and pricing in 2026
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Gemini 3.7 Flash, generous usage limits, basic integration in Google apps |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99/mo | 2x the free limits, video generation, more Google Flow credits |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/mo | 4x the limits, more Nano Banana Pro access, expanded Gemini Notebook |
| Google AI Ultra | from $99.99/mo | Up to 20x the limits, Deep Think, Google Antigravity, YouTube Premium included |
Two things worth knowing before you pick a tier.
Gemini undercuts ChatGPT at every level. $4.99 vs $8 at entry, $19.99 vs $23 in the middle, $99.99 vs $103 at the top. The middle and upper gaps are near-symbolic, but the entry gap is real: 40% cheaper, and it includes video generation, which OpenAI doesn’t offer at any price inside the chat.
Check your Google One subscription first. If you already pay Google for storage, the AI plans fold into that subscription, so you may be one click from having it. And the Ultra plan bundles YouTube Premium - if you already pay for that separately, the real cost of Ultra drops substantially.
Gemini 3.7 Flash: what the free tier actually runs
On August 13, 2026 - just three weeks after 3.6 - Google shipped Gemini 3.7 Flash and fully replaced the previous version. It matters because this is the model free users get:
- A big jump in coding: 65.3% on the DeepSWE v1.1 benchmark, up from 49.0% for Gemini 3.6 Flash
- Not trained from scratch: the gain came from algorithmic changes and user feedback applied to the prior model
- Half the launch price on the API: $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 output, through the end of 2026
The pattern here is good news if you don’t pay: the free model keeps getting materially better without a price increase.
What Gemini does better than ChatGPT and Claude
Google Workspace integration
Gemini reads and summarizes Gmail threads, drafts replies with the full conversation as context, creates Docs from a single instruction and schedules Calendar events - all without leaving the Google app you’re already in. If your work runs through Gmail and Docs, this saves real time every day, and it’s the single strongest argument for choosing Gemini.
Gemini Live
Share your camera or screen and ask questions about what it sees. Genuinely useful for troubleshooting hardware, translating physical text, or getting help while you work in another application.
Video generation at the lowest price
Video generation is included from the $4.99/mo AI Plus tier. ChatGPT does not generate video inside the chat at any tier. If video is part of what you want from an AI subscription, this is the cheapest legitimate entry point on the market.
Deep Think
On the Ultra plan, Gemini can pause, break a complex task into sub-steps, flag distractions and explain its decisions. It’s Google’s most serious answer to the extended reasoning in GPT-5.6 and Claude.
Gemini Spark drops from Ultra to the Pro plan
This is the most significant August change for anyone weighing up the tiers.
Gemini Spark is the personal agent Google announced at I/O in May 2026. It runs persistently on dedicated Google Cloud virtual machines, so it keeps working with your phone locked and your laptop closed. It can review and summarise email, manage your calendar, and work on projects in Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive on its own.
At launch it was exclusive to the Ultra plan at $99.99/mo. It is now available on AI Pro at $19.99/mo as well: the same capability for a fifth of the price.
What that changes in practice: the main reason to pay for Ultra was agentic access, and that argument is now considerably weaker. If Spark was why you were considering Ultra, the Pro plan covers you.
One caveat before you subscribe for it. The rollout started in the United States, with other countries promised “soon” and no date attached. Check that the feature is live on your account before switching plans for it.
Where it falls short
Aggressive safety filters. Gemini refuses to generate images of public figures and is more conservative than ChatGPT on historical or contentious topics. This is the complaint we see most often, and it’s frustrating for entirely legitimate use.
Gemini 3.5 Pro is still delayed. Google’s flagship model has been postponed for months with no announced date. What Google is doing instead is shipping fast iterations of the Flash line - 3.6 in July, 3.7 in August. For free and mid-tier users that’s a good deal. If you were waiting on Google’s top-end model before committing, there’s still nothing to wait for.
Writing quality trails ChatGPT and Claude. Gemini’s prose is competent but generic, with a strong pull toward bulleted lists and neutral paragraphs. Expect to rewrite more than you would with Claude.
Long conversations. Despite a large context window, Gemini tends to lose earlier threads in very long sessions more than Claude does.

Choose Gemini if: you live inside the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Docs, Android) and want AI working directly on your email and documents.
Choose ChatGPT if: you want the most polished generalist, with the widest plugin ecosystem.
Choose Claude if: your priority is writing quality and analyzing very long documents.
What users say
The general view in 2026 reviews is that Gemini has made a real quality leap, though it’s still seen as the best option “if you already use Google” rather than as the universal superior chatbot. What’s praised most: Gemini Live and Workspace integration. The most repeated complaints point to overly cautious safety filters, and to the fact that the genuinely powerful features (Deep Think, Antigravity) require paying for the Ultra plan, considerably pricier than the competition’s other “top” plans.
Who should use Gemini
Use Gemini if:
- You use Gmail, Docs or Drive every day
- You want up-to-date information and reliable search-backed answers
- You want video generation at the lowest possible price
- You already pay for Google One or YouTube Premium
Look elsewhere if:
- Writing quality is your main criterion (Claude is better)
- You need to analyze very long documents (Claude’s 1M-token context wins)
- Google’s conservative filters keep blocking legitimate work
Verdict
Gemini in 2026 is the best-value AI assistant on the market, and the choice depends less on the model than on where you work. If your day runs through Google Workspace, nothing else integrates like this, it’s cheaper than ChatGPT at every tier, and it adds video generation for five dollars a month.
What it isn’t is the best writer or the best long-document analyst. For those, Claude remains ahead.
The free tier is strong enough that there’s no reason to guess: use it for a week on your real work before paying for anything.
